Senior Environmental Specialist 5. When and why did you choose your career path? I've always had a love for the outdoors and knew I wanted a career that would allow me to work away from a desk. 6. What is the name of your company or employer? North Carolina Department of Transportation 7. Describe your primary duties and skills. [Cite your source(s)] Review construction plans in regards to environmental impacts. Obtaining needed permits from federal and state agencies dealing with the Clean Water Act. Survey for federally threatened and endangered species. Delineate and map wetland and stream features. 8. Describe your physical work environment. Cubicle with CADD computer and GIS. . In the field: 4X4 pickup, soil auger, reflective vest, marking tape, Munsell color book, field notebook, bug spray and lots and lots of water. 9. What is your favorite part of your job? Walking through the woods, looking for streams and wetlands, observing the fauna and flora around me. There are times when you wind up in some very beautiful areas. 10. What is your salary? [Cite your source(s)] Ecology-It is the basis and overall encompassing discipline that allows a person to understand their surroundings and how the function together. Climatology - Not too directly useful for my current work, but it allows me to be a more rounded scientist and gives me another element to the overall environment. Geology - In delineating wetlands, a key component is identifying "hydric" soils. The course delved into the scientific processes that cause these soils to become "hydric". 13. [Cite your source(s) and include a course listing from the appropriate degree program] Physics - As a person whose scientific mind leans more to the biology end of things, physics is probably it diametric opposite. Behavior of Animals - This course dealt mostly with the biochemical processes that animals went through to function. There is only so much you can take of learning about the three-spined stickleback. 14. What resources did your school have available to help you get through the most difficult courses? [Cite your source(s)] A very extensive library with so many resources. Tutors for the upper level courses. Professors that were willing to give the time to students that showed an eagerness for the subject. 15. Regarding the two most challenging courses, how did you persevere? Dependable, willing to take on more responsibility and help out when ever needed. Always someone they can come to when they need help. 20. What do you hope to accomplish at the conclusion of your career? Retire to a place on the coast knowing I've made a meaningful contribution to my work. 21. Being a public servant can at times feel unrewarding, but it is good to know that my work has an impact (hopefully beneficial) to society and helps improve peoples everyday life. 1) What is the most prevalent roof type in your area?
The most common roof type in my area are Gable roofs. This is not spread throughout the city and varies extremely throughout it.
2) What type of roof would use on something that you would build?
I would use a Hip & Valley style roof because it is very aesthetically pleasing for branching one story homes.
